How to improve your writing and communication skills

One’s command over language and superior communicating skills are a result of voracious reading and healthy verbal activities. It is very important that you have good communication skills especially if you are in the field which requires you to address the masses like RJ, VJ, journalist, news reporter, telephone operator, etc. You need to know how to put your idea in words, that too in the most effective manner. Even in our day to day life we need words to express our feeling to one another. Excellent communication skills are an integral part of an impressive personality.

You can improve your diction by following simple methods.

  • Read the newspaper daily. It also keeps you well informed.

  • Try and speak in the purest form of that particular language i.e. grammatically correct.

  • If you are aiming to improve upon the language which is not your mother tongue, suppose English then speak to others only in English. You might falter in the beginning but eventually it will make you comfortable.

  • You should not only speak to others in the language but also think in the same.

  • Watch, if not take part, debates and elocution competitions. There are many debates or talk shows happening on TV, nowadays.

  • Make reading novels a habit.

  • Read aloud. Modulate your voice so as to emote the right expression in the text.

  • When you come across a new word or phrase, jot it down (maintain a book for the same) and refer it’s meaning in the dictionary.

  • Watch movies made in that language. This way you also learn colloquial words.

  • Try maintaining a personal dairy. Write all your experiences in it. If you feel strongly about anything you can even write an essay on it.

  • Listen to news on TV. Observe how the reporter modulates her voice, her pronunciation, her body language, etc.

Good conversational and communication skills bring about sophistication and make a charismatic personality. Love the language and practice it well….you will definitely succeed in belling the cat.
