For your information

Astro means star and physics is the study of nature. When you combine these together astrophysics actually becomes a study of stars. And that is precisely what it is. It is a study of the physical and chemical properties like density, temperature, etc of the various planets and stars in different galaxies. For studying astrophysics you not only have to be strong in physics but also in mathematics. With India growing by leaps and bounds in the space sector it is but a matter of time before there is an acute crunch for good astrophysicists.

Indian forays into spaceship launchings and celestial planetary research has opened up new space labs where astrophysicists are trying out day and night to come up with new data. Thus the scope for astrophysics is quite good at this present moment in India. In all branches of astronomy a good mathematical skill is required and astrophysics is no different. All you need to do is get a graduation degree from any college which offers this course and then apply for research work.

You are liable to get calls immediately for in India there is a shortage of astronomical researchers right now. You have to get a B.Sc. or B.Eng. in Physics or Engineering subjects and apply for a Master’s degree programme in one of the Indian Institutions. If you are satisfied with your BE degree and do not want to pursue further then you can get a job as a technician even in some of the foremost institutions like ISRO and DRDO. However you can go further on and add a PhD to your already glowing credentials. With a post graduate degree you can qualify for any research post in the country. At this present moment the job scenario and scope of Astrophysics is quite bright in India

It will be better if you do it form IIT or any other good college .In this field you have to do at least master or research because only graduation will not be sufficient enough for a good job.Admission in IITs is through JEST

The JEST examination is held once in a year, in the month of February.
No material is available for the preparation. The pattern consists of
multiple-choice objective questions, covering general areas in the
field of physics. The exam checks for analytical skills, knowledge of
the subject and ability to tackle the problem. The maximum number of
allotted marks is 150, evenly divided among fifty questions with
negetive marking for wrong answers. The time allotted for the exam is
three hours. Please refer to national and international journals for
information about astronomy. . Students with a post graduate degree in physics or
M.Techdegree in engineering or a bachelor's degree in engineering, in
any field are eligible to apply for JEST examination. Information
regarding the examination will be published in the newspapers. For the
forthcoming exam details, please keep in touch with our website.

There is a severe shortage of serious research astronomers in the
country. However, there are also a limited number of institutions which
actually do research in astronomy. All I can say is that you should try
to get your degree under a well recognized astronomer and you will have
a reasonable chance of success

In India, there are several astronomical institutions including IIA
where astronomers are employed. Other opportunities are in thebig
government institutions such as ISRO and DRDO.
